As the year comes to a close we all start to plan out the next 12 months, fantasizing about what we hope to achieve in 2021 and committing to it via our New Year’s resolution.
While these New Year’s resolutions can be fun to make, but sometimes tricky to stick to, we’ve come up with five simple and easy tweaks you can make to your beauty routine to bring a positive change to your skin, your confidence, and also, the planet.
Beauty Resolution #1: Maintain a consistent natural skincare routine
This goal includes two key components: ‘consistency’ and ‘natural’.
So let’s dive into part one first: Consistency.
You need to approach beauty like you would working out. For instance, going to the gym for one intense sweat session with a personal trainer isn’t going to change your entire health and fitness, much like a facial or single use of a moisturizer isn’t going to change your skin forever. You need to be consistent and develop a routine that you can actually stick to.
Part two: Natural skincare.
Opting for all natural beauty products, that are synthetic chemical and ‘nasties free is always going to be a win for your skin. So if you’ve been questioning, ‘is natural skincare better?’, then the answer is YES! Sure, you’ll have some level of instant improvement (or inner smugness radiating out of you), but you’ll mostly see the real dividends paid out over time.
Beauty Resolution #2: Make your entire beauty routine vegan and cruelty-free
It’s time to treat your skin right, and that treatment goes well beyond skincare and straight into your makeup routine. If you’re making the switch to vegan for your skincare, why not include your makeup too, and adapt your whole beauty regime to be vegan and cruelty-free?
You should be opting for eco-friendly makeup that is totally free of synthetic preservatives because makeup without synthetics is the quickest way to save both your skin and the planet.
To go one step further, we recommend making your entire beauty routine vegan. Due to a huge amount of beauty products using ingredients that have been tested on animals (or formulated using animal derivatives), you can rest assured that by picking vegan skincare, vegan makeup and cruelty-free makeup brands that you’re reducing your impact on the planet and protecting the wellbeing of animals.
If doing extensive research into harmful makeup ingredients seems like too much effort for you in 2021, then there’s a simple blanket rule to follow: only use vegan makeup from vegan makeup brands that promise to use natural ingredients.
Beauty Resolution #3: Use SPF every single day
If you haven’t been wearing SPF on a daily, this should be your resolution for 2021. It’s important to create a daily habit of wearing SPF all year round, no matter the weather, your skin color, or tone. Using SPF daily helps prevent premature aging, skin pigmentation, premature wrinkles, and fine lines – and above all, helps protect against harmful UVA & UVB rays.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you only need to apply SPF on sunny days, because UV rays can affect your skin even when it’s overcast and in the dead of winter. So lather up daily and find extra ways to top up your coverage – like within your makeup!
Beauty Resolution #4: Clean your makeup brushes more often
We know it’s one of those tasks that you constantly delay, but cleaning your makeup brushes regularly is so important. Why?
1. It removes any bacteria living inside the brushes that could be causing irritation to your skin.
2. It increases the life of your brushes – meaning you get more years out of them.
3. It actually improves the final look of your makeup. Cleaner brushes mean a smoother application and a cleaner execution of your makeup look.
Beauty Resolution #5: Swap to sustainable
When picking out environmentally friendly cosmetics, it isn’t just about what’s inside the bottle. You need to think about the packaging too.
In 2021, be on the lookout for skincare with sustainable packaging, boxes and bottles that are recyclable, and products that are greywater safe and good for the environment. If every person on the planet makes a small move towards being more sustainable, that’s 7.5 billion people contributing to a big, positive difference to the environment.
